Walled Garden Build Complete
April, 2025
Last week we planted out our Suffolk walled garden project, which is already looking glorious in the sunshine.
The home is a beautiful barn conversion, but the rear garden was a little unloved with some overgrown trees and shrubs, and a small, unstable concrete patio. It really wasn’t conducive to family living, or entertaining for extended family and friends.
We transformed it into a contemporary space with a dining and kitchen area near to the house, a generous lounge area away from the main patio with a bespoke steel and wire pergola, and an intimate bistro seating space to catch the morning sun.
Limestone style porcelain paving has been chosen for practical reasons, which has been teamed with beautiful limestone pavers for the paths and a ‘rug’ detail in the dining area.
The tangle of trees along the rear boundary has been replaced with a row of pleached Beech to provide screening, and some interest in winter when their rust-coloured leaves will complement the pergola and decorative CorTen screens.
Generous planting beds with lots of structure from ornamental grasses will provide interest throughout the year, with a central bed of tall Miscanthus and herbaceous perennials ensuring the whole garden can’t be seen at once and creating interesting views from different areas. The majority of the planting on the left boundary has been kept fairly low to appreciate the beautiful old decorative wall, which are featured in a few gardens in this part of the world.
Things are quite small now but I have no doubt all will be filling out nicely come the summer, and this time next year will bring a bloom of bulbs.
The clients are delighted with their new garden and can’t wait to get their new furniture and kitchen elements in to enjoy this truly relaxing space.
